Early Childhood Education

Dr. Ruth Pinkenson Feldman
Director, Early Childhood Education

RUTH PINKENSON FELDMAN, Ed.D., has been the director of early childhood services at Jewish Community Centers Association of North America since 1996. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts from Tufts University, she attended Bank Street College of Education, where she earned an M.S. in education, with a concentration in early childhood education. A summer institute on educating the infant and toddler at Harvard University preceded her doctoral work at Temple University, where her dissertation title was “The Impact of Jewish Day Care on Parental Jewish Identity.” In 1995, Ruth participated in The Jerusalem Fellows Program. Her project there was “Midrash, Meaning, and Imagination: Towards a Hermeneutic Construction of Teaching and Learning within Jewish Early Childhood Education”

Ruth founded an infant/toddler program at the Germantown Jewish Center in Philadelphia and was a consultant for early childhood education for the Auerbach Central Agency for Jewish Education in Greater Philadelphia. At JCC Association, she has overseen the development of An Ethical Start, an innovative values curriculum for JCC preschools based on teachings in Pirke Avot, as well as This New Month, a Web-based program for JCC early-childhood educators, which provides teaching ideas for the Jewish calendar.

Ruth has taught at Gratz College, the University of Pennsylvania, Beaver College, and Temple University.
