Havana Is Calling - August '08 Cuba Mission Review
Jewish Social Action month attracted a great group to join in a continental Jewish mission to support and learn with the Jewish community of Cuba . We were in Cuba for a full week making connections with the Jewish community of Cuba , teaching them about Jewish life in the United States . There are an estimated 1400 Jewish people in all of Cuba in 2009.
Our goal was to bring clothes, medications, specific food items and other things to the Jews of Cuba and to get to learn about their lives and experiences and to share our Jewish education and lives with them. We needed to understand the larger context they live in and the overall situation in Cuba to really grasp their experience and to begin to see through their eyes.
These pictures are just a snapshot to help illustrate what we were able to experience, from the three synagogues in Havana and to hearing the Barlia granddaughter sing Hebrew songs for our mission group in our mifgash (connection) in Trinidad . The remnants of Jewish life are very strong and they are very appreciative of our efforts in Cuba on behalf of the Jewish community.
We are in the process of organizing another Jewish mission to Cuba, departing from Miami in March 2010, please check back for further information.
