Bar and Bat Mitzvah Project for Our Jewish Troops
Becoming a bar/bat mitzvah is an important milestone in every Jewish child's life. Many b'nai mitzvah now choose to combine their celebration with a tzedakah project, to focus on what’s truly important: family, community, Jewish identity, and performance of mitzvot.
There are more than 10,000 Jews in the United States military. They often serve in lonely and dangerous places far from home. Although 10,000 sounds like a large number, for Jewish men and women there is always a sense of isolation when serving overseas; they truly need the American Jewish community's love
and support.
Connecting with our Jewish troops through JWB Jewish Chaplains Council is a perfect mitzvah project for your bar or bat mitzvah! All three major rabbinic organizations* have endorsed the JWB Bar and Bat Mitzvah Project for Our Jewish Troops.
As you celebrate this important life passage together with your family, friends and community, you can help raise funds that bring the Jewish community to Jewish men and women serving our country. The funds you raise can be earmarked for:
- Holiday packages for Rosh Hashanah, Hanukkah, Purim, Passover and Shavuot that contain kosher foods, inspirational literature and Jewish ritual items for deployed military personnel: $18 per package per holiday
- Essential-needs packages that include phone cards to call home, toiletries, anti-microbial socks and hand warmers: $36 per package
- Special packages for Shabbat at the most remote military facilities, which include kosher wine, challah, Shabbat candles and kosher snacks: $18 per package to serve

With each package you fund, we can include a card from you or your guest(s).
The troops will be notified of your contribution when packages are sent. We will also provide materials for you to use as you work on the project. Family and friends can send their contributions to JWB Jewish Chaplains Council or contribute online at www.jcca.org/chaplaincy, or you can collect the contributions. We will provide a complete list of guests and their contributions, so you can acknowledge them properly. Each guest will also receive an acknowledgment for tax purposes from JWB Jewish Chaplains Council.
You will receive a beautiful certificate acknowledging your participation in this important mitzvah.
