Programming and Best Practices
This institute will be our introduction to each other and to each others' programs. We will begin with a brief discussion of both successful and unsuccessful programs that the participants have run, and what made them successful or unsuccessful. We will then use those examples to examine the best methods of successfully planning and executing events, from choosing the right venue for the program, to making sure that attendees feel comfortable and welcome as soon as they walk in and creative ways of adding Jewish content to even the most secular of programs.
Presenter: Adam Courtney , Director Young Adult Initiative, JCC Association

Art of Reading People
Connect with others in order to influence them.  Women and men convey how they experience and filter the world through their body language, tone of voice and choice of words.  Discovering how to use the information we “see” and “hear” in others will help us to better influence and communicate with them.  This session focuses on:

  • “Reading” the signals others relay during conversation
  • Responding to non-verbal signals with the correct communication skills and strategies
  • Structuring a high impact message

Presenter: Jan Sparrow
Chair: Alison Rosen

3:30 p.m.

Dealing with Difficult People
“He’s a bully!”  “She yeses people to death!” “He takes pot-shots at me whenever we’re at a meeting.” “He’s a glass half empty guy – nothing is ever good enough!”  Sounds like people you know?  Want to know how to more effectively deal with them?  Participants will learn what drives these types of behavior in others and how to respond authentically and courageously and without compromising their dignity. (Oh, and you’ll laugh too when you see your own difficult behavior!)
Presenter: Jan Sparrow
Chair: Alison Rosen

Thinking Strategically
For our final session of the 2007 Professional Conference, let’s consider ourselves and our own professional development. Are we on the right track? Is our voice being heard within our organization? How can we better envision our role at the JCC, and in turn be more effective in that role? Allan Finkelstein, president of JCC Association , will lead a discussion on how we can better understand the nature of our organizations and position ourselves to be most effective, both in terms of our current position, as well as our long term professional goals.
Presenter: Allan Finkelstein, JCC Association
Chair: Alison Rosen
