Growing Up in a Consumer Culture
Children (K-6th) today are growing up in a consumer culture and are rapidly becoming the sought after demographic for marketers. On average, children view more than 40,000 advertisements a year. In 2004, $3 billion was spent by the fast food companies alone on marketing towards children in the K-6th market. Inundated with messaging, they must learn to navigate through these sometimes murky waters. How does this culture affect the way our kids are growing up? What messages are being sent? And how do we get OUR message through all the static?
