The Jewish Publication Society and JWB Jewish Chaplains Council send 2,750 pocket editions of The Book of Psalms and The Torah: The Five Books of Moses to U.S. Military Personnel overseas

Philadelphia, PA, May 12, 2005:   The Jewish Publication Society (JPS) and JCC Association's JWB Jewish Chaplains Council is renewing a decades-old partnership to provide essential Jewish books to U.S. service personnel. In the next week, 2,750 copies of The Book of Psalms and The Torah: The Five Books of Moses will be shipped to Jewish U.S. service personnel serving in the Middle East and elsewhere overseas, and in the U.S. to arrive in time for Shavuot, the holiday which celebrates the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people.   At no time since the Vietnam War have so many Jewish men and women served on active duty in our country's Armed Forces.

Historically, JWB Jewish Chaplains Council has turned to JPS to provide them with Jewish books.   Through JWB's network of Jewish chaplains and lay leaders, JPS publications are distributed to Jewish men and women serving in theaters of war and around the world. The current military activity in the Middle East has created a greater demand for Jewish Bibles and other texts, which provide inspiration and comfort, and together, JPS and JWB Jewish Chaplains Council is meeting this demand. Through mutually-beneficial fundraising efforts, The Jewish Publication Society is now raising money to continue to fund the JWB efforts to supply these lightweight, compact editions.    So far, enough has been raised to distribute 1,750 copies.   JWB Jewish Chaplains Council has purchased another 1,000 books, thanks to direct donations to JWB.

In the coming months, JPS and JWB will jointly publish a complete pocket edition of the JPS translation of the TANAKH (Hebrew Bible) in an even more compact edition.   Thousands of copies of this lightweight edition will be printed, specifically sized to fit the needs of those in the military, and will be made available wherever there is a need.   There has not been such a joint publication since World War II.

The Jewish Publication Society is a nonprofit educational organization formed to enhance Jewish culture by promoting the dissemination of religious and secular works, in the United States and abroad, to all individuals and institutions interested in past and contemporary Jewish life.   Since 1888, JPS is the world's oldest publisher of Jewish books in English.

JWB Jewish Chaplains Council is authorized by the U.S. government to meet the religious, educational and morale needs of Jewish men and women serving in the Armed Forces, and to certify and provide ongoing services to Jewish chaplains and lay leaders serving the military. It has been meeting these needs since World War I.
