JWB
Jewish Chaplains Council Sends Soldiers Hebrew Bibles in Honor
of Shavuot
In honor of Shavuot, the Festival of Weeks, JWB Jewish Chaplains
Council has sent 1000 copies of the Holy Scriptures to active-duty
chaplains all over the world for distribution to Jewish service
men and women. During this time of conflict, JWB Jewish Chaplains
Council felt a gift that has consoled and inspired so many
to be particularly appropriate.
The paperback Tanakh includes the Torah, the five books of
Moses, Nevi’im, the Prophets, and Kethuvim, the Writings,
which include Psalms, Proverbs, and the rest of the material
in the Hebrew Bible. Shavuot celebrates the giving of the
Law at Sinai, and is traditionally observed with an all-night
Torah study session.
A letter has been enclosed in each case of 24 Bibles with
the name and address of a donor, so that the recipients can
send thank-you notes. Donors to JWB Jewish Chaplains Council
include high-school students, retirement communities, Jewish
women’s groups, synagogues, and individuals, many of
whom are military veterans.
JWB Jewish Chaplains Council, an integral part of JCC Association,
has been serving American Jews in the military since World
War I. They provide religious and educational supplies and
materials, kosher food and gifts, and endorse chaplains from
all Jewish denominations for all branches of the U.S. Armed
Forces.
