JCC Association’s Jewish Chaplains Council Helps to
Provide Torahs to Jewish Troops in Iraq
Rabbi David Lapp, director of JCC Association’s JWB
Jewish Chaplains Council, joined last week in the presentation
of three of four sefer Torahs to be sent to Jewish chaplains
in the Middle East. New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton
was there, along with Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, president of
the New York Board of Rabbis (NYBR), senior rabbi of Congregation
Mount Sinai in Brooklyn and FDNY chaplain, and NYBR members
Rabbi Allan Schranz of Sutton Place Synagogue in Manhattan,
Rabbi Robert Levine of Rodelph Sholom in Manhattan, and Rabbi
Bruce Ginsburg of Congregation Sons of Israel in Woodmere
and National President of the Union for Traditional Judaism.
The Torahs, donated by the above congregations, are to be
transported to Iraq and Kuwait in time for the celebration
of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the Jewish High Holidays.
The Jewish Chaplains Council acted as a liaison between the
chaplains in Iraq and Kuwait and the New York Board of Rabbis.
The Torahs will be escorted to the Persian Gulf personally
by Chaplain (Col) Jacob Goldstein in time for the commencement
of Rosh Hashanah on Friday evening. Senator Clinton aided
in arranging for transport and insurance.
“We were one of a group of organizations that made this
possible,” said Rabbi Lapp. “It was an example
of achdus , teamwork, and that’s what is so important
in Jewish life. We all worked together to bring a Jewish spiritual
experience to our men and women serving in a hostile environment.”
