The National Center for the Hebrew Language views Ivrit (Hebrew)
as a key to the renaissance of meaningful Jewish life in America
today and has positioned itself as an American advocate for
the Hebrew language, as a provider of resources for both teachers
and students of Hebrew and as a catalyst for the networking
of organizations, schools and individuals engage in Hebrew
language activity.

today and has positioned itself as an American advocate for
the Hebrew language, as a provider of resources for both teachers
and students of Hebrew and as a catalyst for the networking
of organizations, schools and individuals engage in Hebrew
language activity. It also engages in public programming,
such as Lunch & Lit, a series of seminars on Hebrew literature
in translation.
The NCHL publishes a newsletter, Ivrit Now, which provides
news of Hebrew activities nationwide, the analysis of a Hebrew
poem, and the study of a Hebrew root. It maintains a Web Site,
www.ivrit.org, with 4,000,000 hits and 150,000 visitors in
the past year. Among its ongoing features are Millat ha-Yom,
Millat ha-Parashah, Millat he-Hag, the Bi-weekly Hebrew Root,
and a section on Hebrew Life and Letters. In addition, the
website provides a Directory of Ulpanim, an "Ask the
Experts" feature, a guide to the purchase of Hebrew learning
resources, and a page of important Links.
The NCHL participates in major meetings of Jewish communal
and educational organizations, presents and publishes position
papers on Hebrew, and is the founder of the "friend-raising"
National Society of Lovers of the Hebrew Language.
The NCHL engages in cooperative program development with universities
and national organizations. It undertakes and supports research
activities, public programs, teacher-training, in-service
education and professional development programs. The NCHL
maintains a Hebrew Language Resource Center for both the general
public and professionals in the field. It has a Board of Directors
of national leaders in the Jewish community, an Honorary Board—consisting
of such luminaries as Elie Wiesel, Cynthia Ozick, Ruth Wisse
and Neal Kozodoy—and an Academic and Professional Advisory
Council made up of the leaders in the field of Hebrew education
and programming.
The National Center for the Hebrew Language recognizes that
Ivrit, the Hebrew language, serves the interests of a great
variety of enterprises in Jewish life. Hebrew is an instrument
of empowerment for individuals, organizations and entire communities.
The knowledge of Hebrew, from the most basic level to the
most sophisticated, provides both real and psychic benefits
to those who become increasingly skillful at it. It is a medium.
It is a message. And it is a call to action.
